A mountain carved into thousands of steps, a staircase reaching a height of 2000 metres: these are the largest rice fields in the world. Near the borders of Vietnam and Laos, the Hanis, inhabitants of the region, have been cultivating rice on terraces for 2,500 years. Later, the technique spread over the whole of south-east Asia, and proved vital for the growing population. Today however the ecological equilibrium is under threat, and the Government has just prohibited digging out new rice fields. Every year, in order to find a new means of subsistence, the men leave their terraces at the end of the harvest.
