Sinopsis
The anarchist trade union CNT was founded in Barcelona in 1910 and, from its very beginnings, showed a growing interest in cinema as an instrument of propaganda and artistic expression. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, the CNT nationalized the film industry in Spain. In Madrid and Barcelona the workers in the film industry, through the trade union, took over the means of production and a number of films were produced. This was a unique period which has occurred in no other country’s cinematography. Despite the fact that the country was submerged in a bloody civil war, between 1936 and 1938 films on a great variety of subjects were made and released: social dramas, like "Aurora de esperanza", musical comedies like "Nuestro culpable", investigatory films denouncing social injustice like "Barrios bajos", war documentaries which marked the beginnings of modern journalism…. All these make up a varied mosaic reflecting one of the strangest, most original moments in all Spanish filmography. Directors like Ignacio F. Iquino, actors such as Félix de Pomés, Ricardo Núñez, Charito Leonís, Paco Martínez Soria and Mary Santpere were the protagonists of this unforgettable experience. Through the voices of different experts, as well as first-hand testimony from Spanish director of photography and restorer Juan Mariné, who began his film career working on these pictures, the documentary covers each of those productions which make an exceptional contribution to Spanish film heritage. This was a fleeting period during which Spanish scriptwriters, directors, technicians and actors demonstrated the most famous show business maxim; despite bombardments, hunger and the drama of war, “the show must go on” - as indeed it did.
