Alou, a Senegalese man, is smuggled into Spain and forced to take menial jobs with very precarious working conditions due to his illegal immigrant status. Through the letters he sends to his family, we learn about his experiences and feelings during this difficult process of integration into Spanish society. His travels around the country start in Almeria, where he works in its greenhouse farms. Then, he goes to Madrid, where he has his first contact with sales of illegal goods. From there, he goes to Segrià to harvest fruit and, finally, to Barcelona, where he works in a fellow African immigrant’s clothing company. Alou’s adventures are abruptly interrupted when he is arrested by the police, but he comes back across the Strait of Gibraltar, completing the circle that leaves open the door to a hopeful future.
