Before taking her vows as a nun, Viridiana is taken from the convent against her will to visit her old uncle, Jaime, who has been behind the scenes paying for her studies and her dowry. As soon as she arrives, Don Jaime is overwhelmed by Viridiana’s resemblance to his deceased wife, who died on their wedding night, and he asks for his niece’s hand. She refuses his proposal, but accepts his wish to see her in a wedding dress. With the help of his faithful servant, Ramona, Don Jaime drugs Viridiana and takes her to his bedroom. At the last moment, he is overcome by the sight of the helpless sleeping Viridiana and refuses to spend the “wedding night” he couldn’t have with his deceased wife with her, as he had thought. The next day, Don Jaime asks for his niece’s hand again. She runs away to the convent horrified, but before she arrives there, she receives word that her uncle has committed suicide. In light of this tragedy, Viridiana decides to stay at the estate, considering herself guilty for her uncle’s death and unfit to be a nun. From this point on, she tries to express her Faith by helping the poor of the area. She has them move in with her, but this ends up being a disaster, as Viridiana can’t free herself from her own spiritual emptiness and the beggars don’t submit to her plans for work and prayer. They betray Viridiana when, one day, taking advantage of her absence, they organize a grotesque and sacrilegious feast in her uncle’s house. When Viridiana catches them in the act, two of them try to attack her. Totally resigned and defeated Viridians looks for her cousin, Jorge, who is in love with her and with whom Ramona has also been captivated. The film ends with a game of cards between the three of them.
