As a part of the cultural programme offered by the Spanish Embassy in Sofia, the 16th Spanish and Latin American Film Week was held from 16 22 June 2009. Over the last few years this event has become a must for film lovers in Bulgaria. As in previous years, the Spanish Embassy and the Diplomatic Missions of Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Chile, Portugal and Venezuela in Bulgaria presented 18 films, making up a good sample of current Spanish and Latin American cinema in all its variety, including both fiction and documentaries.
The event was opened on 16 June with the screening of Crossing Borders , a comic portrayal of Spanish emigration in the sixties. Goya in Bordeaux , by Carlos Saura, and El milagro de Candeal , by Fernando Trueba, are two other films shown at this Film Week. In addition, this year, to close the festival, the Cervantes Institute organised a round table after the screening of the film A Fiance for Yasmina , attended by one of the main actors, Francisco Olmo.
