EVERYONE IS LYING IN OXFORDIs it possible to know the truth? Can we have any certainty? An old maths teacher and a young logics student face their contrasting ways of seeing life upon resolving a series of mysterious crimes. Ambiguous characters, murders, mathematical codes and the city of Oxford as a dark backdrop create an enigma in a film produced by Tornasol Films and Estudios Picasso. The production had a budget of 8 million euros. Starring long-time British actor John Hurt, the young American Elijah Wood (best known for his performance as Frodo in
The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and the Spanish actress Leonor Watling,
The Oxford Crimes marks a return to the big screen for the Basque filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia, director of films like
The Day of the Beast and
Common Wealth. Iglesia hasnt had a film debut since 2004: the
Ferpecto Crime, turned the perfect crime then into a surprising change of style.
EMULATING THE MASTER ALFRED HITCHCOCKHitchcock is not a director, he is a way of being, a genre of his own, said Alex de la Iglesia about the mental father of his latest creation upon presenting it to the public. Hitchcocks influence is undeniable.
The Oxford Crimes is rooted in classical rules of murder and mystery films, which the so called wizard of suspense masterfully brings to cinema. Here, in addition to the constant tributes given to the British director, the spectator will find out who has murdered an old woman, whose death is but the first of a series of murders which the two leading characters of the film investigate. Do you dare? The crimes are being solved in Spanish cinemas starting 18th January.
