Adios to Paul Naschy, the Great Werewolf of Spanish Cinema

The most “terrifying” actor in Spanish Films has passed away at age 75.

A student of architecture, designer of record covers, writer of Western novels and seven-time Spanish weight-lifting champion. Jacinto Alvarez Molina was many things. But, his true passion was cinema, in particular horror films. And from this came the name Paul Naschy, given to him in Germany “because you wouldn’t get anywhere with a name like Jacinto Alvarez at that time,” he admitted. He started out working as an extra in super-productions like King of Kings or 55 Days at Peking. He was assistant director of Aventura en el palacio viejo and in 1968 he was inspired to write his first script, for The Mark of the Wolfman. With this film Jacinto Alvarez became Paul Naschy and he, in turn, Waldemar Daninsky. The most famous werewolf in Spanish cinema history was born. Naschy would play him twelve more times: Nights of the Werewolf, Dracula Versus Frankenstein, The Werewolf Versus the Vampire Woman, The Fury of the Werewolf, Dr. Jekyll and the Werewolf, The Night of the Werewolf, Night of the Howling Beast, Return of the Wolfman, The Beast and the Magic Sword, Howl of the Devil, Lycantropus , and Tomb of the Werewolf.

Paul Naschy appeared in nearly a hundred films and directed 14. He became a cinema idol for fantasy-horror film lovers, with thousands of fans around the world (he was adored in Japan and Germany, and Quentin Tarantino declared himself an unconditional admirer). In Spain, while he had little in the way of awards to honour him in life, he did receive the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2001. With a certain recent resurgence in horror films, Paul Naschy returned to star in titles like School Killer, Rottweiler , and Rojo Sangre. On Monday, a silver bullet in the form of cancer took our werewolf forever. We are left with one film as of yet unreleased. Its title, La Herencia de Valdemar [literally, The Inheritance of Valdemar ], puts a prophetic finishing touch on a prolific film career. It's coming to Spanish cinemas on January 22. All an honour to a great Spanish film personality.
