The latest film by Madrid filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar, <i>Agora is one of the most anxiously awaited releases this year. The prestige of the director, his change of genre and the fact that it is the most expensive film in the history of Spanish cinema have all added to its appeal. Audiences have flocked to see it and in one weekend the film has earned 5,377,403 euros without even including the bank holiday on the 12th.
In second place is Disneys latest production, G-Force , which, including the 3D version, has grossed 2,581,880 euros, less than half the earnings of Amenabars film.
Another Spanish film is in third place, REC 2 , with 1,138,839 euros in its second week out, beating Inglourious Basterds once again; this movie only earned 933,148 euros, although after four weeks in Spanish cinemas it has brought in a total of 9,034,367 euros.
Vicky the Viking in its second week is in fifth place with 678,433 euros, followed by Woody Allens new comedy, Whatever Works (631,226 euros) and the thriller starring Bruce Willis, Surrogates , with 631,226 euros.
The Secret of Her Eyes , the film by Campanella which received such rave reviews at San Sebastian, is still getting good box office results in its third week out, with 519,695 euros. Finally, one of the surprise hits this season, District 9 , brings up the rear with 142,146 euros.
