Actress Anne Hathaway, along with Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences of Hollywood president Tom Sherak, have announced, a few hours ago, the nominees for the 82nd annual Oscar Awards. For the time being, the first round has resulted in a tie between the now-historic Avatar by James Cameron and the recently-premiered film The Hurt Locker by director Kathryn Bigelow. Each of them has obtained nine nominations. Inglourious Basterds has eight and Up in the Air and Precious have six apiece. What’s more, all of them are competing for the Oscar for Best Picture, which this year for the first time has ten nominees instead of five, with An Education, A Serious Man, District 9, The Blind Side and Up, the second animation film in history to be a Best Picture nominee (the previous one being Beauty and the Beast 18 years ago) rounding out the ten.

In the category of Best Director, there are no surprises – the aforementioned James Cameron (Avatar) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) join Lee Daniel (Precious), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air) and Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds).

There are also no surprises for the Best Performance categories. Male actors nominated are: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Colin Firth (A Single Man), George Clooney (Up in the Air) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker). As for actresses, we find the ubiquitous Meryl Streep in the running for the statuette for the sixteenth time, a revived Sandra Bullock, getting her first nomination for The Blind Side, along with Gabourey Sidibe, star of Precious, Carey Mulligan (An Education), and Helen Mirren (The Last Station). It should be noted that Spanish actress Penelope Cruz has her third Oscar nomination, vying for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the part she played as Guido Contini’s lover in the musical Nine. Also competing in this category are Maggie Gillenhaal (Crazy Heart), Mo´Nique (Precious), and two stars of Up in the air, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.
