To many who see Ciclope, the master work of science fiction Blade Runner will readily come to mind, but Spanish audiences will quickly identify with its locations. Madrids Gran Via has been chosen by Carlos Morett, the films director, to set the story of Ciclope, produced by IgnotoPlanet.
The film has been four years in the making for the ten minutes the short lasts. However, it has the honour of being the first Spanish short film created with real actors in virtual sets. Its director, Carlos Morett, has developed his professional career in various countries: Canada, the United States and Mexico, where he was born. He has also worked for major motion picture companies, applying his knowledge of special effects for cinema. For example, he has worked on some of the episodes of the famous series The X Files.
The story of Ciclope takes place in the future of a new Madrid, involving two police officer brothers and the conflict of one of them, which calls into question his continuity on the force, being immersed into a nightmare world due to an error which will affect him for the rest of his life.
The director, of Mexican-Catalonian ancestry, states that Madrid is a city for all genres. Whats more, why do extraterrestrials always have to arrive in New York? I live here and the Gran Via is my Fifth Avenue.
The short film has been a labour of love from the start. The police uniforms are skaters protective gear aged by the art director and Carlos Morett himself painted the basement of a house green to use it as colour key. Now the Region of Madrid has granted him a subsidy of 8,000 euros.
