For many years, Spanish short films have been submerged in an unfair and arbitrary darkness. Fortunately, however, little by little, they have begun to become known in our society through new means of bringing this discipline to light. One of the architects of this awakening is Juan Antonio Moreno Rodriguez (Madrid, 1959), who, with his essay Cine en corto. Una aproximacion a los ultimos cortometrajes españoles [Film in Short: An Approach to the Latest Spanish Short Films] has established rules bringing short films to the same level as feature films as far as research and analysis are concerned.
The author has had 20 years of experience since his first article was published in the newspaper La Tribuna de Albacete . Starting in 2007, he has been publishing reviews of short films in the Diario de Alcala , although he has been primarily working with two magazines dealing with the world of creation: El medico, profesion y humanidades , and Buenas Noticias, revista de arte y cultura .
The book focuses mainly on the history of short film, with an in-depth examination of the years from 1996-2008. The author analyses in detail 41 short films from this period. He also addresses the future of the short film and the establishment of ACE (Agencia del Cortometraje Español [the Spanish Short Film Agency) and the Coordinadora del Corto [Short Film Coordinator].
In Cine en corto , Juan Antonio Moreno Rodriguez asserts the maturity of the Spanish short film and its social and cultural importance, adding an appendix of the major short film festivals in Spain, the best evidence of the health of the Spanish short film.
