U-Turn explores the addiction to the automobile in todays society and aims to answers questions about the ecological and energy costs it creates. According to Joan Borrell, one of the producers, This is a different kind of documentary. We know that the subject can appear to be dry, so we will be keeping a very humanistic and ironic focus.
The innovation of the final film product will be in its combination of archive film footage and even flash animation. We have taken great care to have everything completely defined before going ahead with shooting, points out Garcia de Leaniz. Its a complex project, and unlike usual practice, we have a screenplay that is almost as detailed as a fiction film, he explains.
U-Turn is the feature-length film debut for the directors as well as their first project together. While Sergio Garcia de Leaniz has had a long career in production, with titles like
Carmen and
Caminantes, Vicente Perez Martinez comes to the project having directed numerous short films, among which are the award-winning
Talented and
El Tipo.
Following the American experience, the crew will move to Spain, where shooting will take place in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Asturias, and Toledo. However, the extent of its locations wont stop there. Production will continue in numerous countries in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
Among other funding sources, this Spanish-Mexican co-production has support from the Programa Ibermedia and the Castile-La Mancha Regional Government. It is being produced by the Spanish companies Pluto Entertainment and 14 Pies, and the Mexican producer 91 Films.
