2012 , the long-awaited and highly-publicised film by Roland Emmerich (maker of smash hits like Independence Day , Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow ) took first place, as expected, at Spanish box offices, with stratospheric premiere collections of over 5.5 million euros.
Emmerlichs Mayan Apocalypse tale relegated Celda 211 [Cell 211 ], the Spanish surprise hit release of the year, to second place and, in its second week on the top ten charts, it took in 1.17 million euros.
The eagerly-anticipated A Christmas Carol , however, which is blowing away box office sales at no. 1 on the U.S. "Top Ten" list, could only reach third and fourth in Spain in its premiere week, with its 3D version (970,000 euros) and standard format (696,000 euros), respectively.
Agora continues its slow descent on the list. This week, Amenabars new film had to settle for fifth place, with results translating to 686,000 euros in earnings. Meanwhile, in spite of the super-star appearance of Richard Gere in the cast, the touching Hachiko: A Dogs Story dropped two places with 495,000 euros in collections in its second week.
Seventh place was held by The Box (362,000 euros). The film starring the charismatic Cameron Diaz hasnt convinced Spanish audiences and has dropped four places in the ranking two weeks after its release.
Julie & Julia has also dropped in the list, in this case from sixth to eighth, with ticket sales of some 360,000 euros. Flickan som lekte med elden [The Girl Who Played with Fire ] continues to take advantage of the phenomenal success it had in book form, able to take in 331,000 euros and ninth place on the list.
Finally, the mass-release film G-Force squeezed in at tenth place with 239,000 euros, holding a slot in the Spanish top ten for the sixth week running.
