This filmmaker from Seville, who could be considered as part of the New Spanish Cinema movement, made humour and sweet looks his trademarks, and his filmography begins with the famous From Pink to Yellow (1963), followed by titles like The Girl in Mourningor comedies like Why Does Your Husband Deceive You? .
Before each feature film a recent Spanish short will be shown, in accordance with the Academys new policy. This is the only cinema in Madrid which includes short films in its regular screening programme.
The schedule starts on 7 May with the screening of Broken Toys (1966), in which Summers portrays various celebrities who were popular at one time but forgotten in their old age: a bullfighter, a weightlifter and a showman, amongst others. This film is about the neglect and decadence of oblivion, a theme also treated in the documentary Urtain, King of the Mountains about the famous boxer.
On 8 May To er mundo e mejo (1982) will be shown. Here the director recorded the reactions of various people confronted with extreme situations, with a hidden camera: a corpse in a toilet, a limping man accosting passers-by, and other situations set up to demonstrate peoples kindness.
