The documentary Those Who Stay (Los que se quedan) by the Mexican director Carlos Rulfo, and the Franco-Chinese film Coal Money (L'Argent du Charbon ), by Wang Bing, were awarded first and second Jury Prizes in the Original Documentary Full-length Films section, carrying prizes of 10,000 and 5,000 Euros respectively. This was announced this morning by the Director General of Cultural Activities in the Arts Area, Manuel Lagos, together with the Director of the Madrid International Documentary Festival, Documenta Madrid, Antonio Delgado. The prizes will be awarded at the gala evening at the end of the festival on Saturday 9 at 21:00, at the Teatro Circo Price in Madrid.
In the same category, the Honorific Jury prize was awarded to the Serbian film Good bye, How are you? directed by Boris Mitic, and the Audience Prize, carrying the option of distribution in Spain within the framework of the programme "El documental del mes", was won by the Spanish film The City of Signs (La Ciudad de los Signos ), by Samuel Alarcon.
The Slammer (La Chirola ), by the Bolivian filmmaker Diego Antonio Mondaca won the Jury Prize in the Original Documentary Short Films section, and also the Audience Prize, while Second Prize went to the Polish film My Mum, Dad, God and Satan by Pawel Jozwiak-Rodan.
Meanwhile, in the Documentary Reporting Competition, the Jury Prize, which carries 10,000 Euros, went to Fixer: the taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi from American director Ian Olds and in second place was Coyote by Spanish director Chema Rodriguez.
In the National Competition, Diogo Costa Amarante obtained the Feature-length Jury prize with his film In January, Perhaps (En enero, quizas ). This is the second year running he has received a prize; at the last festival he won an award in the short film section. The audience prize for short films went to the Hispano-Uruguayan co-production Palace (Palacio ), by Luis Alaejos and Raul Diez Alaejos. As for the national short film category, First Prize went to Sad Drunk (Triste Borracha ) by Chema Rodriguez, the only director to enter two films in the Competitive Sections and get two awards. Second Prize went to the Spanish film The Salt Men (Hombres de sal ) by Manuel Jimenez.
The Filmotech.com prize, which awards 3000 Euros to the documentary most viewed on their website while Documenta Madrid 09 is being held, had to be shared this year. The tied prize-winners were Cosmos (Yongheng ) by Miguel Angel Rolland and Displaced (Desplazados ) by Josep Lluis Penades Boada.
Finally, the Avid Award for Best Editing, carrying an Avid Xpress Pro software package or equivalent, was given to the Hispano-Argentine co-production Loneliness (Soledad ) by Ricardo Iscar.
Documenta Madrid will also present the entry conditions for the 2010 festival, which will be held nest year from May 7 to 16 at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
