The director of the film himself, David Cronenberg, has announced his next project: preparation of the sequel to Eastern Promises. The film was considered by critics to be one of the best of 2007 and its leading actor, Viggo Mortensen, was nominated for an Oscar for his role as the Russian Mafioso, Nikolai.
"Its the first time Ive felt like doing a sequel; Ive never had the desire to do so before. I dont think weve finished with these characters, and we have so much work done with Nikolai that we couldnt fit it into just one film. Well have to meet with Steve Knight and Paul Webster very soon to talk about the script which I have powerful ideas of how it should be. If we like the script, well do it", added Cronenberg.
The filmmaker confirmed this second part will have the whole team as the first film from Mortensen to producer Paul Webster and scriptwriter Steven Knight. What is unknown for now is if Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassel will be back.
However, many believe this is a rather risky project because, in spite of the experts rating it a quality film, the viewing public hasnt given the first film much of a chance, earning a total of 17 million dollars in the US and 39 in the rest of the world.
