Last Tuesday, the official programme for the upcoming European Film Festival (with official poster designed by Carlos Saura) was presented in Seville. At this sixth edition, which will take place November 6-14, some 150 films will be shown, with 16 of them in the Official Section.
This year, the festival will pay tribute to British cinema, showing some of the best titles in its history, as well as allowing room for new talents. It will also give its Premio de Honor to director Fernando Trueba (Oscar-winner with Belle Epoque ) and will show his major works, including his latest, The Dancer and the Thief [El baile de la victoria ].
As has become customary at this event, the European Film Academy will hold a ceremony to announce nominations for the European Film Awards on November 7. Among the 48 films in the running for the 2009 awards are three Spanish films (Broken Embraces [Los abrazos rotos ] by Pedro Almodovar, Camino by Javier Fesser, and Return to Hansala [Retorno a Hansala ] by Chus Gutierrez).
The section of the festival devoted to the selection made by the European Film Academy (EFA) is presenting 23 of the 48 nominees, some directed by some of the best known filmmakers in European cinema today, like Jan Troell, Ken Loach, and Andrzej Wajda. The Eurimages section is offering nine Films, among which stand out titles by Michael Haneke and Marco Bellocchio.
The film Triage, starring Colin Farrell and Seville actress Paz Vega, will be inaugurating the Festival, and is in the running for its top award, the Giraldillo de Oro. Titles in the Official Section are the following:
