It had been widely announced that Oscar-winner George Clooney was to make a cameo appearance on ER, the series which made him a household name. Once again, Clooney donned his white coat to play Dr Ross, and the audience ratings obtained by the series soared to over 10 million viewers, the highest for the last two years.
In episode 1519, entitled Old Times, Dr Ross appears happily married to Julianna Margulies (Carol Hathaway) and working in a hospital in Seattle. The episode also featured actress Susan Sarandon and other old characters such as Dr Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle).
Clooney worked on the series from 1994 to 1999, during five whole seasons. In the end, his character was accused of helping a euthanasia case in order to facilitate his departure from the series, as he wanted to work in films.
ER was one of the most profitable series to run in the United States. The programme won 21 Emmy awards out of a total 122 nominations and attracted 30 million viewers during the five seasons in which Clooney was a regular feature.
