The film Das Weisse Band (The White Ribbon ), directed by Michael Haneke, will receive the Fipresci (International Film Critics Federation) Grand Prize for best film of the year at the opening ceremonies of the San Sebastian Film Festival on September 18.
Michael Haneke (b. Munich, 1942) is one of the most admired and awarded directors of contemporary cinema. Winner of the prestigious Palme Dor from the Cannes Film Festival 2009 for Das Weisse Band (The White Ribbon) , Haneke has received countless awards, among which are the Best Director Award for Cache (2005) and the Jury Grand Prize for La pianiste (The Piano Teacher, 2001), both from Cannes.
The Fipresci Grand Prize for Best Film is selected by the worldwide members of the International Federation of Film Critics, who can vote for any feature film that has been internationally released starting in July of the previous year.
The Fipresci Grand Prize is awarded annually at the San Sebastian Film Festival and winning directors from previous years have been Pedro Almodovar (All About My Mother , 1999 and Volver , 2006), Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia , 2000 and There Will Be Blood , 2008), Jafar Panahi (The Circle , 2001), Aki Kaurismaki (Miles Vailla Menneisyytta / The Man Without a Past , 2002), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Uzak / Distant , 2003), Jean-Luc Godard (Notre musique / Our Music, 2004), Ki-Duk Kim (Bing Jip / 3-Iron , 2005) and Cristian Mungiu (4 luni, 3 saptamani si 2 zile / 4 Months, 3 Weeks, & 2 Days , 2007).
