Until 16 July the Academy exhibition hall will open its doors to the best-known faces in Spanish cinema, for Portraits of Spanish Cinema. This exhibition contains photographs of Najwa Nimri, Eduardo Noriega, Leonor Watling, Eduard Fernandez, Juan Diego, Unax Ugalde, Javier Camara, Belen Rueda, Bigas Luna, Alex de la Iglesia, Ariadna Gil, and Barbara Goenaga, to name but a few.
These photographs were taken by Jeronimo Alvarez, for publications or film posters and now, after being on display at the Festival of Nantes, they have arrived here at the Academy.
This collection of portraits is something like a personal anthology which I was asked to put together for the 19th Spanish Film Festival of Nantes. In most cases the pieces were done for the media: magazines or film posters; or they were personal projects which were published later, says Jeronimo Alvarez, the artist responsible for the collection. But when I was actually taking the pictures, I was always very much inspired by my love and admiration of film. Its as though these are isolated photograms of films which only exist in a folie a deux fantasy shared by myself and those I photographed.
Jeronimo Alvarez (b. Madrid, 1973) currently works as a freelance photographer, in advertising and for various publications (El Pais Semanal, Rolling Stone, Marie Claire, FHM, Esquire) doing portraits and also record sleeves.
En 2003 he received the INJUVE Photography Competition Prize and, amongst others, has taken part in the following exhibitions Entrefotos (2004, 2003), Photoespaña 04 (projections), Photoespaña 05 (group exhibition), El espejo del alma -El retrato fotografico en la España de nuestros dias [The mirror of the soul Photographic portraits in Spain today] (Madrid Autonomous Community, 2007-08), and of course the Nantes Spanish Film Festival, L´etoiles du cinema espagnol [Stars of Spanish cinema] (2009) mentioned above.
The show is free of charge and open to the public Monday to Friday, from 11:00 to 13:00 and then 17:00 to 20:00, except on bank holidays.
