The singer is fighting to get the role in a film which recounts the life of Edward VIII

It is not the first time that Madonna has been interested in a film role. The same thing happened with Eva Peron, in Evita, in which she starred with Antonio Banderas.

The relationship between the reigning monarch Edward VIII (an uncle of Elizabeth II) and the twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson gave rise to a political crisis in Great Britain when the King abdicated in order to marry Simpson.

Madonna identifies with Simpson as both were born in the US and moved to England, a controversial step supposedly taken for love of an Englishman.

According to the daily newspaper The Sun, Madonna, who has already obtained her divorce from ex-husband Guy Ritchie, has covered the walls of her London home with articles about Wallis Simpson and has even written to the Queen to ask her permission to play the role.

"Madonna sees Wallis Simpson as her next big film project. She is as passionate about it as she was about playing Eva Peron. She is fascinated about this American commoner who refused to conform or offer explanations for her tangled love life, claims the tabloid.
