The actress will star in Black Swan following orders of the director of The Wrestler.

Black Swan has been on the drawing boards since 2007. But the heads of Universal Studios werent particularly enthused at first. Finally, with a number of changes to the original script, acceptance by Natalie Portman for a leading role, and the success of director Darren Aronofsky, the film was given new impetus. This filmmaker showed what he could do with his last film, The Wrestler, which was a comeback success for Mickey Rourke.

28-year-old Portman will play a veteran ballerina competing with a rival with supernatural abilities, complicating her struggle until the day they both have to demonstrate their talents in a major performance. The aim of the film is to create confusion for the viewer as to whether whats happening in the film is real or the dream of the star, more or less as M. Night Shyamalan did in The Sixth Sense or Alejandro Amenabar did in The Others .

Meanwhile, Aronofsky is working on a new sequel in the Robocop franchise, which was a hit in the 80s, with a follow-up film in 1990.
