On Thursday, 12th July, the official presentation in Spain of the 1st Maya Riviera Cancun International Film Festival 2007 took place in Madrids Casa de America, the main public center in Europe dedicated to the diffusion of Ibero-American culture. It was announced that while the festival will be held for the same length of time and in the same month, the dates have been moved up one week to November 5-11, due to circumstances beyond control of the festival organizers. The festival has been created to show the best of international contemporary cinema. The event will contribute to the momentum of new values of Mexican and Ibero-American cinema with a deliberate focus on regional artistic development, encouraging the new cultural tourism of the Mexican Caribbean. The presentation was presided over by
Gabriela Rodriguez, Tourism Secretary of the Quintana Roo State Government and had the participation of
Patricia Lopez Mancera, Press Director of OVC Cancun (Cancun Visitors and Conventions Office),
Javier Aranda, General Manager of the Fidecomiso de Turismo de la Riviera Maya (Maya Riviera Tourism Trust),
Martin Ruiz, Sub-Secretary for Promotion under the Tourism Secretary, and
Gabriela Rodriguez herself, closing the institutional speeches. The director of the Festival, Spanish film-maker Pedro Valiente, expressed his appreciation for all of their words of support and highlighted key points of this event considered unique and innovative, having first works of fiction, documentaries and short films, plus cinema, cultural, and ecological activities. The festival will place special emphasis on the discovery of new values in international cinema, support for Mexican and Ibero-American films, as well as encouragement of training, production and distribution in the film industry.
