Penelope Cruz is unstoppable. While only a few days ago, she was in Madrid for the presentation of Almodovars new film Los abrazos rotos , we cant forget that she still has another release up her sleeve: the film adaptation of the musical Nine.
The film is directed by Rob Marshall, maker of other musicals taken to the big screen, such as Chicago and Annie, and was performed in theatres on Broadway by another of Spains most international actors, Antonio Banderas. Curiously enough, the script of Nine is in turn based on Federico Fellinis film 8 and a Half. Hence, film, play, and once again, film.
The musical tells us the story of Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), a film director in the middle of a creativity crisis. At this time, in searching for inspiration, he looks back on the major events in his life and, naturally, all the women who have passed through it: his mother (Sophia Loren), his wife Louisa (Marion Cotillard), his muse (Nicole Kidman), his lover (Penelope Cruz), his best film critic (Kate Hudson) and a prostitute, the singer in the Black Eyed-Pies, Fergie.
With an all-star cast, Marshall once again gives us a story rarely seen on screen. Javier Bardem himself was going to play the lead role, but various commitments made it impossible to fit in this filming. So, in the end, the Irish actor Daniel Day-Lewis took his place.
Nine is due to be released in the U.S. on 11 December 2009.
