Films, documentaries and Rock And Roll are headliners for the next Berlin Film Festival being held from 7th to 17th February. Twenty-one films are competing for the Golden Bear Award in the official section. Among them is
Elegy, the latest film directed by Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet, an American production starring actors Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz. This is the third time the Spanish director has a film participating in this film festival, after
Cosas que nunca te dije, which was in the Panorama Section, and the second going for the top award (after
My Life Without Me, which was entered in the official section in 2003). The jury, presided by Costa Gravas, will have to choose between three French films (
Il y a long temps que je t´aime, Julia and
Lady Jane), a British production (
Happy-Go-Lucky), two German films (
Feuerherz and
Kirschbluten-Hanami), an Italian, (
Caos Calmo) and a Finnish, (
Mustra Jaa). American cinema will also be represented by three films:
There Will Be Blood, Gardens of the Night and
Ballast, along with the documentary
S.O.P. Standard Operating Procedure, about the scandals in the Abu Ghraib Iraqi prison. Latin American films are in the running with the Brazilian-Argentine production
Tropa de Elite and the Mexican
Lake Tahoe. The Official Section is rounded out by films from Iran, Israel, China, Japan and South Korea. The scant Spanish representation is boosted by a retrospective dedicated to Luis Buñuel, in which 40 films of this director from the Aragon Region are being presented with the documentary
The Last Script Remembering Luis Buñuel, an intimate portrait of the legendary Spanish filmmaker, directed by Javier Espada and featuring his son Juan Luis Buñuel, and Jean Claude Carriere, who was the script-writer for some of his films. Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Daniel Day Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley are among the stars which have confirmed their appearance at the long-running film festival which, in addition to the film on the
Rolling Stones, will also have the participation (out of competition, as well) of a documentary on the singer Patti Smith and Madonnas filmmaking debut, as director of
Filth and Wisdom.
