Directed by Francisco Brives (Nunc et in hora ) and featuring several actors from his last feature film, this new work by the Galician filmmaker tells us about the world of independent theatre, the decadence of former glory in what spokespersons of the producer have described as a fresh, irreverent comedy.
La escalera de Jacob is the story of a theatre and its owners, two sisters who loathe each other, but jointly inherit an old theatre. Amongst the other characters are a corrupt politician who provides them with all kinds of subsidies and a whole circus of aspiring actors who provide a perfect breeding ground for humour, betrayal, theft and situation comedy. I wanted to talk about the world of theatre, small independent theatres, and the lives of actors and their ups and downs from within, explains the director. There are several situations in the film which will seem familiar to all those who have ever been to an audition or have had to fight with an agent. I hope they will be able to have a good laugh when they recognise themselves on the screen".
Shooting of the film is scheduled for the beginning of August, lasting until the beginning of September, and the cast includes Julian Ortega, Luisa Aguado, Natalia Dominguez and Chema Rodriguez (who is also co-author of the script).
According to Brives the feature film will also give rise to a spin-off television series, in a light, economical format.
