The short film ¿Consumes o te consumen? by Pablo Alonso Gonzalez, from Spains Region of Castilla-Leon, took first prize in the short film contest "Un minuto contra el cancer de pulmon" [One Minute against Lung Cancer] organised by the Grupo Español sobre el Cancer de Pulmon (GECP) [Spanish Association against Lung Cancer]. The public choice award, with online balloting, went to Absurdo , by Costa Ricans Federico Lang and Gaston Saenz, in which they humorously proposed 50 reasons to quit smoking.
After having got contest participants to compress into only one minute the negative consequences of this habit, the GECP has proposed a new goal: to conduct a public awareness campaign with these short films. It is hoped that they will be used to persuade smokers, especially the youngest, to give up the bad habit of smoking tobacco. According organisations website (on which both the winners and finalists can be seen), in recent years in Spain, there has been a worrying tendency concerning tobacco use, with a growing problem in increasingly young age groups due to the early picking up of the smoking habit.
