Although the process known as word of mouth had already worked very well for this film, when it won eight statuettes, including Best Motion Picture and Best Director, it caused many more spectators, intrigued by this phenomenon, to go to the cinema to satisfy their curiosity. In Spain, for example, in the first week of its release (13th February) the movie reached third place in the box-office top 10, after The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Beverly Hills Chihuahu. One week after the Oscars, it had scaled the summit to top position. The same has happened in Argentina and the UK.
This movie only cost 15 million dollars to make but it has already earned over 200 million worldwide; although internationally Benjamin Button is still the bigger box-office hit, Slumdog Millionaire is hot on its heels.
