The delightful comedy by Fatih Akin, Soul Kitchen, has received the most enthusiastic response of the festival so far, and many consider it a favourite to win a Golden Lion Award.
Akin presents us with an intriguing comedy with a good story and a fast pace, joined by two charming characters viewers will instantly identify with.
The filmmaker has a lot of experience with festivals, taking the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2004 with con Gegen die Wand [Head-On ], and the award for best screenplay at Cannes in 2007 for Auf der anderen Seite [On the Other Side ]. Now, in Venice he only has one problem: comedies dont usually win at these kinds of events.
Philippine director Brillante Mendoza has presented Lola, which has had a strong showing at the festival after winning the Best Director award at Cannes.
The Italian film La dopia ora and the Egyptian The Traveller were also shown in Venice yesterday.
Today will be the last screenings of the festival, with A Single Man, directed by Tom Ford and starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Matthew Goodey, and the eagerly-anticipated Mr. Nobody, with performances by Jared Leto, Diane Kruger and Sarah Polley, which was in the making for 8 years. Out of competition, we will be able to see The Hole, by Joe Dante.
