Spanish Film Mentiras y gordas, Most Popular in Spain Last Weekend

Good news for Spanish Cinema, as it’s been some time since a domestic production came in first place

Having young TV actors in the cast is a sure bet. This is what was done with the film Mentiras y gordas, starring trendy young talents from Spanish television: Hugo Silva, Mario Casas, Yon Gonzalez, Ana de Armas, and Ana Polvorosa, among others. The film, which shows us the darkest side of youth, raked in 1,793,314 euros in its first weekend in cinemas.

Clint Eastwood wasn’t able to keep up with these kids and his Gran Torino dropped to second place, although not bad at all taking into account that the film has been showing for four weeks. It’s brought in a total of 7,940,679 euros so far from the Spanish box-office.

Third place went to another Spanish film, Broken Embraces. Almodovar’s new project has been somewhat disappointing and seems to not have caught on with the public as well as expected. Even Penelope Cruz could only help it reach 662,913 euros in box-office receipts last weekend.

Following these, came in a couple of romantic comedies, Marley & Me, with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson (641,350 euros) and the debut of Confessions of a Shopaholic (568,654 euros).

In sixth place was Julia Roberts’ return to the big screen. Along with Clive Owen, she stars in Duplicity, a film which has been in Spanish cinemas for two weeks and last weekend had 535,233 euros in revenues. It’s followed by Bedtime Stories at 496,340 euros.

Slumdog Millionaire, the big winner at the Oscars, remains unmoved from the Top Ten most seen Films in Spain, after seven weeks on the list. To-date, it has had 8,993,999 euros in revenues from the Spanish box-office.

Ninth place goes to another premiere, Street Fighter: the Legend of Chun-Li, a new version of this video game. Starring Kristin Kreuk, the film earned 414,074 euros. Closing the Top Ten list was Hotel for Dogs with 324,650 euros.
