In evaluating the granting of this award, the Film Academy has examined the work that the Agencia Española de Cooperacion Internacional para el Desarrollo AECID [Spanish International Cooperation Agency for Development] channels through the Spanish Film Programme for Abroad, with its nearly one thousand film series, in collaboration with diplomatic representatives and consulates, which serve to link Spanish departments with foreign universities, cultural centres, Instituto Cervantes offices, and whatever other institutions of a cultural nature are interested in knowing about Spanish culture through cinema.
Set up in 1979, the Filmoteca for Abroad is one of the services with the greatest cultural tradition dependent on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and has a broad range of cinema, both retrospective and contemporary.
The Gonzalez Sinde Award was created in 1998 to recognise the work of institutions or individuals who use the cinematographic media for achieving social ends. The first award was given to the Fundacion de Ayuda contra la Drogadiccion [Spanish Foundation for Assistance against Drug Addiction]. Since then it has been given to the Fundacion Casa del Actor, the Drag Magic collective, the Cinema Rescat association, the Museu del Cinema-Colleccio Tomas Mallol, the bookshop 8 y Medio , the Instituto Valenciano de Cinematografia Ricardo Muñoz Suay, the Nantes Film Festival and the Festival Solidario de Cine Español de Caceres.
