It seems that Spanish audiences wanted to laugh at themselves. Spanish Movie , the first parody film of Spanish cinema, took in 2.15 million euros in ticket sales in its first weekend. The new Spanish blockbuster grabbed first place in the box-office ranking away from New Moon, which its attractive vampires held onto for two weeks. With 1.76 million, the vampire romance dropped to third place in the ranking. This retreat meant more surprising good news for Spanish cinema, with the super-production Planet 51 holding onto the second place position it took the previous week from earnings of 1.98 million euros.

The trend toward Spanish productions ended at third and fourth places in the top ten list, which were taken by New Moon and 2012, respectively. Spanish audiences paid out 992,000 euros for the latter apocalyptic story by German filmmaker Roland Emmerich. It was followed by the premiere of Old Dogs , a family comedy starring John Travolta and Robin Williams which had a strong showing in its first weekend with 922,000 euros in sales.

Returning to Spanish films, Cell 211 dropped to sixth position, with earnings of 747,837 million euros. Seventh place went to the recently arrived Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs . The animation film by the director of Shrek 3 follows the ups and downs of a hilarious scientist which in Spain is dubbed by the same actor who does Flipy (the mad scientist from the TV programme "El Hormiguero"), and earned 663,000 (3D version) and 505,000 (standard version) euros in its first weekend in theatres.

Paranormal Activity has not been able to emulate in Spain the success it had in its country of origin. The top box-office hit in the U.S. has taken in a modest 1.25 million euros so far in Spain and continues its descent in the top ten, taking ninth place from last weekend’s results. Closing out the list this week was another Spanish-made film, Fernando Trueba’s latest, The Dancer and the Thief, which added 313,000 euros to the 902,000 it earned in previous weeks
