Viggo Mortensen walked down the red carpet of the Venice Film Festival to present his latest film, The Road, which is competing in the official section. The film is based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, the writer of No Country for Old Men
and winner of a Pulitzer Prize. The movie, directed by John Hillcoat, tells the story of a father and son trying to stay alive after a worldwide catastrophe leaving only a handful of survivors. In the film you can also see Charlize Theron in a small role, and Robert Duvall.
The American director Todd Solondz also presented what could be considered as the second part of Happiness: Life During Wartime. This film also focuses on the Jordan family, although the actors are different. Again, this is a socio-political critique which covers taboo subjects like paedophilia, incest and suicide.
The presence of the Hollywood contingent is guaranteed today with the screening of Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, directed by German filmmaker Werner Herzog, and starring Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer and Michael Shannon.
Otherwise, two of the three Spanish films presented at the festival, Rec2 and Cell 211, have been well received at their showing out of competition. In a few days well know how Gordos, by Daniel Sanchez Arevalo, has fared.
