Apres le trou (After the Escape) evokes the prison environment with echoes of the world of adventure and the criminality surrounding the work and life of Jose Giovanni. Failing to escape, Manu Borelli is in solitary confinement. The prison director, Mr. Sarquiet, calls him to his office to tell him of the need for him to make some changes in his life. Manu recalls a terrible event which happened some time earlier, when a cell-mate asked him to help him break his arm so he can be sent to the hospital. Manu speaks to no one and does nothing else apart from looking out the window while listening to conversations or reflections about crime, the prison, the war, death, treason, the police, etc.
