This is the story of Agustin, a good, pious man who lives in a small Aragonese village. He is friendly with the whole community, and happy to help and protect them. Agustin is a widower with one son, who completed his studies and became a famous doctor in the capital. This son is married, with one daughter. Agustin feels lonely, nevertheless, and decides to go and live with his son and their family. The villagers dont want him to leave, and to compensate them he gives away all his property. In the big city he is received coldly, as he lowers the tone with his rustic simplicity and commits blunders, some of which may be deliberate. He sees that those surrounding him, his son and daughter-in-law, and even the maid lead agitated, unquiet lives and are in moral danger. Agustin starts to resolve their problems, guided by his village wit, piety and humanity. Finally he decides to return to his village, convinced that city life is not for him, and is welcomed back with festivities and genuine delight.
