In Trescabañas, a small Castilian town, Aurora works as a schoolmistress. She is young and attractive; and her sweetness and understanding of the infantile world cause Juan, a hypersensitive boy of 12, to fall in love with her. Frequent visits and walks persuade certain dirty-minded people that the relationship between teacher and pupil is unhealthy, and they proceed to make Auroras life impossible. However, she continues to believe in her sincere educational ideas. Fernando, who hasnt come to Spain since the war, makes friends with Aurora and helps her get over some difficulties and unfriendly treatment. Both fall in love, and Aurora is prepared to leave everything for him. Fernando is cowardly and unwilling to make a commitment. Juan is more generous, but he is only a child. When the lack of understanding of the townspeople provokes a confrontation between the authorities and Aurora, the children try to defend their teacher. In this crisis Fernando decides to run off, leaving Trescabañas. Aurora follows him to Madrid, but the impossibility of their relationship becomes obvious and they separate, though she does not return to Trescabañas. Juan, ever faithful to the memory of his schoolteacher, makes friends with Fernando when he comes back to the village and perhaps misses the woman who loved him. Auroras absence has left a deep impression on her two `suitors`.
