Milton is twenty-three years old and lives in the south of Bogota, in the neighbourhood of Altos de Cazuca in Soacha, one of the most dangerous areas in Colombia. There, being young increases the risk of being killed by paramilitary groups in the so-called social cleansing raids. For young people in Cazuca, being a gang member, smoking marijuana on a street corner, playing on slot machines, possessing compromising information and even sometimes being Afro-Columbian or going out at night in the barrio are reasons enough to be blacklisted; and that is a death sentence. From 2002 to 2007 different NGOs have reported the murder of over a thousand young people and six hundred disappearances in the Altos de Cazuca and Ciudad Bolivar neighbourhoods. Milton has left his life as a gang member behind him, and now he is struggling to make progress and achieve his goal: a future for the youth of Cazuca, with their names no longer appearing on the blacklists.
