Based on a true story, this film recounts the life of Jose Maria, a 16-year-old boy who notices that he feels like a woman in a mans body. He helps in the family business, a small hotel in a town near Barcelona. However, he doesnt fit in this environment. His sister is his true confidant, as he tells her everything that is going on. Jose Maria is unhappy because his classmates make fun of him and publicly ridicule him, calling him a queer. This reaches such an extent that the school principal decides to expel him because he sees him as a provocation to his classmates. His furious father hits him and threatens to kill him if he doesnt change his ways. To face this situation, Jose Maria works hard to make himself into a full man. To do so, one day his father takes him to a transvestite bar in Barcelona called Starlet, where the father introduces him to an old friend, with the idea that the boy will lose his virginity with this young woman. This doesnt happen because the boy is repulsed by it. However, the father doesnt find out about this failure. At the Starlet, there is a performance by the enigmatic Bibi Anderson (who plays herself in the film), a transvestite who performs like a genuine woman, but ends up showing her male attributes at the end of the performance. Jose Maria is intrigued by what he has seen and believes the big city offers him more possibilities for survival than staying with his homophobic father. So, he escapes to Barcelona without his familys permission.
